Commissioned by OPPLE, Zhang Ding created a large light and sound installation using software defined lighting technique. Reminiscent of a stage, the work gathers various elements related to technology and modern society, such as OPPLE's new lighting technology, cellular tower, solar tower, etc., all presented together with crystal glass sculptures and sound.
Dominating the city hustle and bustle, cellular towers are nowadays part of our urbanscape. They stand on rooftops, emitting fluctuations of signals, becoming omnipresent yet elusive. In the work, a giant steel tower emanates flickering light signals, forming a spectral maze blurring boundary between reality and fantasy.
The artwork is immersed in a sound inspired from electric pulses and particle collisions combined to human nervous system fluctuations and variations in the passage of time, as in a dialogue with the universe.
Through this mise-en-scène, the artwork emphasizes on light, both natural and artificial, to express the relationship between humans, nature, technology and environment, inviting viewers to reflect on the possible balance and harmony within the challenges brought by the pursuit of progress.
