Since the 18 Cubes was presented at the Encounters section of Art Basel in Hong Kong in 2016, gold cubes have been included in Zhang Ding’s works of ‘cubes’ series. He presents the most basic form of goods in our times in a minimalist way. This is the basis of circulation of goods, and is also related to both the commerce of today and intervention and digestion on hard currency in the post-industrial context. For the Spinning Cube, two golden stainless steel cubes of a cubic meter infinitely approach to each other. The viewer’s perception of physical convention is disturbed by the psychological illusion along with the balanced space created by in the spinning movement.
